Introduction

We offer a full range of dinghy sailing, from to instruction for complete beginners to top-class racing . Most of all we offer a friendly welcome to sailors of all ages and stages.

The club began in 1955 at Sugar Loaf Beach in Portishead to promote the sport of sailing on the Bristol Channel. More than 50 years on we have grown from humble beginnings to one of the leading coastal sailing clubs in the South West.

We are proud of our National Champions and World Championship competitors. However we are also able to offer sailing to everybody regardless of their ability. Some years ago we entered into partnership with Training Saints, a watersports tuition company, to become a RYA Accredited Training Centre. This means we are can offer formal sailing qualifications, from complete beginner upwards, together with instruction in windsurfing, powerboating and personal watercraft. We also have a Cadet section for young people.

Whilst racing makes up a large proportion of our sailing programme, we also run a number of events throughout the year with the aim of encouraging the non-competitive side of the sport. The highlight of our calendar is undoubtedly the “Try Sailing” weekend, open to all who want to have a go with help from our enthusiastic members. Some of our more light-hearted events include the Docks Regatta (match-racing in the confined waters of Portishead Quays using our fleet of Toppers), family fun days, and participation in the local carnival.

You don't have to own a boat to go sailing. At Portishead we have a fleet of Topper singlehanders and other larger club boats which are available for members to hire on sailing days. A good way to learn is by crewing with a more experienced person and we operate a crew list system. We welcome boats of all classes and operate a racing handicap system.

We look forward to meeting you at Sugar Loaf Beach soon.

All welcome - Try Sail day
